Call for applications: Apply now for the NTN Innovation Booster on the theme of Data & Team Sports

Experts and interested parties in in the field of sport tracking, coaching, sport psychology, behavioral sciences, data science, etc. are invited to apply now for participation in the dedicated NTN Innovation Booster (NTN-IB) powered by Innosuisse, which will take place on 15 June 2022, from 9am to 5pm, as well as on 7 September 2022. All sessions will be organised face-to-face in Lausanne. The Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) will be the Theme Leader and aim at finding innovative solutions answering those questions:

What factors (physical, behavioral, psychological, etc.) contribute to the collective performance of a team and how can we quantify them?

How can the behavioral information be communicated to sports coaches in a useful and efficient way, in particular during vs after the game/sport event? – i.e. how to build better coaching support tools

What team performance aspects can be used to enrich broadcasting media to create value for spectators?

Apply here until 3 June 2022 to participate in one or more sessions of this important challenge.

Context

Data Science and Artificial Intelligence have made their triumphant entry into the realm of sports. The ubiquity and dropping price of wearable hardware, matched by the growing computational capacity of mobile devices and speed of mobile internet connectivity, drive an avalanche of data pertaining to athlete’s individual performance and health. The availability of data resulted in development of many algorithms used to monitor and track the progress in athletes’ training, especially in conjunction with more accurate than ever location data (GPS, Glonass, Galileo).

The great success of performance tracking and coaching systems is largely limited to individual sports, such as running, cycling, snow sports etc. In team sports, the few reported attempts to use quantifiable athletic and health performances, up to now, largely limited to tracking statistics for individual players.

The performance of a sports team is more than the sum of individual prowess of the team’s members. It is not limited by physical abilities alone; it also includes a lot of behavioral and psychological factors.  However, up till now, no quantifiable ways exist to evaluate, quantify, and compare the collective performance of sport teams.

This challenge’s objective is to address this shortage and to consider the combination of cognitive, behavioral, and psychological factors, combined with a data-driven approach, in order to better understand team performance in sports.
