Innovation alert: Swiss sailor develops smart watch for nautical sports

The young Geneva-based company Timeon is launching a smart watch specially designed for regatta sailors, kite surfers and other water sports enthusiasts. The innovative product is the brainchild of Rémi Aeschimann, a 28-year-old professional sailor (Realteam) and entrepreneur from Geneva.

Timeon watch is equipped with a unique safety function to ensure rescue within a group, which is relying on radio frequencies and not on a cellular network often not in place everywhere. The system can be compared to avalanche victim detectors used in skiing and other mountain sports. The new technology of the watch also provides for the synchronisation of time between several Timeon watches, thereby enabling the synchronisation of countdown systems for starting signals at regattas with the sailors’ watches. In addition, Timeon provides all the classic functions of a sports watch, including GPS tracking, an altimeter and chronometry.

The innovative start-up is supported by the Geneva Creativity Center (GCC) and Innosuisse and has collaborated with the Haute école du paysage, d’ingénierie et d’architecture de Genève (HEPIA) on technical details. The start-up has also just received a loan from the Fondation pour l’innovation technologique (FIT). Timeon is about to release the first prototype, "an alpha version that will allow us to test the user interface," says Rémi Aeschimann. “From April, we hope to release a beta version to start testing in real life, on the water". The watch is expected to go on the market in early 2022.
