Video-Based 3D Modelling of Golf Swing

Development of a video tracking of golf player and club motion for swing improvement.

We developed a video-based approach to watching the player swing using a video cam-era and tracking both the player’s and the club’s 3—D motion. The system could then look for deviations from an ideal motion, highlight them and offer advice.

In order for such a system to be widely accepted by both golfers and golf clubs, it can require neither expensive devices nor the use of specifically instrumented golf clubs or clothing. The golfer must be able to practice with his usual clubs and outfits. This is why we proposed an entirely passive technique that relies on one camera and an ordinary PC but requires no additional instrumentation.
