2018: A pivotal year for Russia?

2018: A pivotal year for Russia?

Russia, who will host the forthcoming FIFA World Cup, continues to generate significant media scrutiny: presidential elections, military engagements, geo-strategic activity and doping scandals. This vision of Russia, which is often associated with an image of force and power, raises many questions. Furthermore, as a country with a millennia of history, and which covers a giant territory that extends from Europe to Asia, it holds a genuine fascination.

As she prepares to host the most publicized sports event on the planet, how will Russia offer herself to the world? What will be the issues and impact of this event? Will 2018 be a pivotal year for the Russian people and nation?

At this conference we will provide clarity to these numerous questions and allow the public to better understand this country of such diverse and wide ranging facets.

Born in 1957, ERIC HOESLI is a Suisse journalist, and specialist of Russia. A former editor-in-chief of the “l’Hebdo”, he creates the journal “Le temps” in 1997, of which he was chief editor from 1998 until 2004. After having occupied different management positions within the groups of Edipresse and later on Tamedia, he was named in 2014 Professor at the EPFL and at the University of Geneva. He is also the author of the books “À la conquête du Caucase” (2006) and “L’épopée sibérienne” (2018), as well as a large number of articles dedicated to the ex-USSR and to the Russian world.
