LIVE-TWEET: Start-ups lined up to pitch at UEFA

Today it’s time for 18 carefully selected start-ups to pitch at the UEFA Start-Up Challenge, an exclusive accelerator programme facilitated by ThinkSport in the heart of Switzerland’s unique sports ecosystem. This 12-week programme has been designed for early- and extension-stage start-ups with ambitions to impact football positively.

Each young entrepreneur competing at the UEFA Pitch Day is active in one or more of the following seven categories:

  • fan engagement, entertainment & big data;
  • protecting the game;
  • performance, match analysis and sports technology;
  • leveraging UEFA’s community of members;
  • smart facilities and venue operations;
  • social impact; and
  • wildcard.

During the first half of the day, each start-up will have three minutes to present their business solution. This will be followed by a five minute Q&A session with the jury and the audience, composed of UEFA experts, academia, sport industry leaders and innovation gurus. Following the pitch session, there will be an initial selection of start-ups for further questioning by the judges and UEFA mentors in the second half of the day. In addition, UEFA will provide the opportunity to its staff to rank each start-up on an internal, interactive voting platform. At the end of the day, it will be announced who will be invited to join the accelerator programme. A handful of the competing start-ups will be selected.

Successful applicants will be mentored by senior business leaders from UEFA, get the opportunity to test and demonstrate products / services in live environments as well as gain access to potential investors through their participation at THE SPOT. ThinkSport’s thrilling sport and innovation event will take place from 28 to 29 May in Lausanne, Switzerland. Amongst others, THE SPOT will feature an exciting start-up battle, with 80 young companies going toe-to-toe over two days.

The initiative forms part of the new UEFA Innovation Hub, aimed at helping UEFA better anticipate the future and stay ahead of the game, both on and off the pitch. Its initiatives will encourage, inspire and support UEFA staff to propose, test and implement innovative solutions that could help solve challenges facing the organisation and European football generally while fostering more synergies between the various divisions and units.
