THE SPOT side event: "Building an Autonomous Data Economy in Sport”

ThinkSport’s international sport and innovation flagship event THE SPOT, will take place on 8 and 9 May 2023 in Lausanne, Switzerland. This year, it will host a number of exciting side events on specific topics.

One of those side events will focus on the challenging topic of "Building an Autonomous Data Economy in Sport” (organised by SACSS).

When?             Monday, 8 May, 2.00 - 4.00 pm

Where?            Synthlon building on the campus of the University of Lausanne

Who?               Anyone with a stake or interest in the topic is welcome

Context

The sports data industry serves a multitude of specialised and highly dynamic markets while facing growing demand on data privacy. This potentiates the costs of innovation and development, while often serving only small markets. Producing a return-on-investment under these circumstances is tough.                                                             

Jean-Sebastien Merieux, CEO of Dartfish, a Swiss based company specialised in providing video analysis solutions for sports performance sums it up:

"The Sport Data Industry is a good place to start a company, but also a good place to fail with it."                  

To radically change this deadlock, it is essential to lower the costs of innovation, minimise the time to market for b2b and b2c data products while maintaining good data governance.

The dedicated session will concentrate on two potential solutions:

1. Establish standards in the industry

How about building a digital ecosystem by making data accessible and standardising data exchange? The resulting data service network would allow anyone to build small services at reasonable costs and provide the opportunity to monetise them quickly through data consumers further down the value chain.

2. Achieve business automation and transparency with blockchain technology

How about creating a working data economy on top of the data service network by automating business transactions and transparently aligning incentives to maximise data sharing while preserving data privacy by design?
