Fostering the Heritage of Olympic Games: Innovation through a DNA Analysis of the Host

The study aimed to analyse the cultural, social and sporting heritage of the Winter Olympics in St. Moritz.

The results provided useful elements for the design of an innovative infrastructure that will serve not only the operations of the games but also their legacy. It includes initiatives in the areas of sport, tourism and culture that can contribute to long term positive impact on the region, with respect for its DNA. The methodological approach was to gather evidence of the existence of tangible and intangible legacy related to the organisation of the Olympic Games in 1928 and 1948 in a given territory, namely in the cities of St. Moritz and Davos as well as in the canton of Graubunden. Tangible legacy includes landscapes, sites, buildings and all objects related to the 1928 and 1948 Olympics. Intangible legacy includes all projects, processes, initiatives, symbolic representations and values related to the Games of 1928 and 1948 and the sport, including the city of Davos. The history of the region of the Engadine, its tourist traditions, the development of new sports disciplines in the first part of the century, the harmonious integration of the city in a majestic landscape, meaningful customs, experience from numerous Olympic bids, and tributes to peace through sport competitions have contributed to the establishment of an ingrained legacy and caracterised experience through the following cultural values:

    • Synergy between man and nature in a spirit of sustainable development.
    • An open mind leading to an exchange of cultural networks.
    • A pioneering spirit in the field of mountain tourism.
    • The ability to produce a common effort and to develop alliances.
    • The emphasis on quality and innovation, inspired by the (Swiss) tradition.

This legacy then served as an inspiration to five proposals related to the bid for the Winter Games in St. Moritz and Davos in 2022 aiming to develop an olympic legacy and respect for the roots of the sport in the region with innovative projects.
